Montclair Art Museum’s Free Family Day ~ Beats of the African Diaspora

Who: All ages.
What: This Museum-wide Family Day examines the African Diaspora’s influence on American arts. Programs include: 
• Rennie Harris Puremovement History of Hip-Hop: this demonstration of movement, rhythm, and sound illustrates the roots of hip-hop in African tradition and culture throughout the diaspora (including African American, Afro-Brazilian, Afro-Cuban, and Puerto Rican cultures) from the ’60s to today.   
 • Soul Steps will offer an interactive stepping workshop. Stepping is a percussive dance movement using feet, hands, and arms to create rhythmic sound. Stepping closely resembles gumboot dancing that began among 19th century South African miners.
• Afro-Brazilian Cultural Center will demonstrate the martial art and dance of Capoeira. 
 • Art projects will highlight the outstanding African American
artists represented in MAM’s collection.
