Learn to Ride–Kids
Who:
Best for children ages 5 and up.
What: This class teaches a safe, easy, effective way to learn to ride. Using this “balance first” method, facilitators help get children rolling while the child does most of the work. Participants learn the basics of balancing, starting, stopping, and steering a bike, as well as proper helmet fit and adjustment. Most kids learn to ride their bike while
taking the class, but even if they don’t, they will leave with an easy, hands-free, crash-free, and low-stress way to learn to ride. Refeshments will be provided.

What: Join the museum on a voyage of discovery around the world starting right here in NJ. Visit the galleries to explore artists from different cultures. Then create your own artwork using sculpture, printmaking, textile art and painting techniques. Each week focuses on a different art and science theme. This week view examples of bandolier bags, beautifully decorated bags made by Native American Tribes, and design and decorate your own to take home. Then follow the journey of songbirds and participate in the birds’ fateful flight.

Mommy and Me (where “Me” is a teen)

Who: Moms and their adolescent daughters.

What: The transition from childhood to adolescence is a difficult time in the lives of both daughters and parents. Mommy and Me (where “Me” is a teen) is a 6 week program designed by Lisane Basquiat and her daughter Jessica Kelly to help make this transition easier for moms and daughters. The workshop is designed to help create a good relationship of communication, awareness, and positive energy between mothers and daughters through physical fitness, nutrition, conflict resolution abilities. There will be separate group sessions for moms and daughters, Energy Leadership, nutrition, and personal training assessments. The program’s primary fitness expert, Stanley Louis, will lead group workouts as well as personal training workouts that are good for both mom and daughter. Coaching sessions will also be held with two follow-up coaching sessions post workshop.

Newark Black Film Festival’s Youth Cinema: The Dot, Amazing Grace, Brave Irene, and Chicken Sunday

Who: Children ages 4 – 12.

What: The Dot, as presented by Scholastic, is an animated collection of inspiring, award-winning children’s book stories of a girl learning to appreciate her own talents. In Amazing Grace, Alfre Woodard narrates Mary Hoffman’s book about overcoming self doubt. Brave Irene tells the story of a young girl who learns where there’s a will, there’s a way in.  Chicken Sunday presents the story of a young Ukrainian-American girl who despite differences in religion and race befriends her African American neighbor after the death of her own grandmother.

Superheroes for Hospice: Comic Book Art Contest and Book Sale

What: Join Superheroes for Hospice as they celebrate their first anniversary with a comic book art contest and a comic book sale. Contest entries must be submitted by 1:30 pm. And will be judged in three age groups. Winner will receive a gift certificate to Joe Kubert’s World of Cartooning and must be present to claim their prize. At 1 pm art designer Micael Lapinski will give a lecture entitled “Elements of Comic Book Page Design.” Artists Bobby Vala and Manny Mederos will draw your favorite characters on request and Archie Comics editor/writer Paul Castiglia and Robot 13 creator Thomas Hall will talk comics and sign copies of their work. All sales from the comic books will benefit the patients and families of the St. Barnabas Hospice and Palliative Care Center.

Mommy and Me (where “Me” is a teen)

Who: Moms and their adolescent daughters.

What: The transition from childhood to adolescence is a difficult time in the lives of both daughters and parents. Mommy and Me (where “Me” is a teen) is a 6 week program designed by Lisane Basquiat and her daughter Jessica Kelly to help make this transition easier for moms and daughters. The workshop is designed to help create a good relationship of communication, awareness, and positive energy between mothers and daughters through physical fitness, nutrition, conflict resolution abilities. There will be separate group sessions for moms and daughters, Energy Leadership, nutrition, and personal training assessments. The program’s primary fitness expert, Stanley Louis, will lead group workouts as well as personal training workouts that are good for both mom and daughter. Coaching sessions will also be held with two follow-up coaching sessions post workshop.

8th Annual Golf Classic to Benefit the Childrens’ Cardiomyopathy Foundation

Mommy and Me (where “Me” is a teen)

Who: Moms and their adolescent daughters.

What: The transition from childhood to adolescence is a difficult time in the lives of both daughters and parents. Mommy and Me (where “Me” is a teen) is a 6 week program designed by Lisane Basquiat and her daughter Jessica Kelly to help make this transition easier for moms and daughters. The workshop is designed to help create a good relationship of communication, awareness, and positive energy between mothers and daughters through physical fitness, nutrition, conflict resolution abilities. There will be separate group sessions for moms and daughters, Energy Leadership, nutrition, and personal training assessments. The program’s primary fitness expert, Stanley Louis, will lead group workouts as well as personal training workouts that are good for both mom and daughter. Coaching sessions will also be held with two follow-up coaching sessions post workshop.

Teen Art Classes at MAM: Life Drawing, Figurative Panting & Composition

What: This course, modeled on a college-level studio course, will help to develop formal skills while promoting analytical, critical and creative thinking. The first two weeks focus on Life Drawing, which studies the human form using nude models. During the second two weeks, students will paint the clothed human form, dealing with light and shadow, composition and color. Students must provide their own supplies.

Free Youth Summer Enrichment Program

Who: Children grades 2 through 10.

What: The BlueWaveNJ Public Interest Foundation holds its second Youth Summer Enrichment Program. The program is designed to give children in grades 2 through 10 one-on-one tutoring in all subjects to ensure they are ready for the coming fall semester. Classes run in half day sessions and are designed to engage children and challenge their creativity. Children in grades 2 through 5 will have sessions held from 9:30 am -12:30 pm and children in grades 6 through 10 will attend classes from 1 pm – 4 pm.

Warm-Up and Public Reading of the Declaration of Independence

Montclair’s Spectacular Fireworks Display

West Orange Independence Day Celebration

Who: Everyone of all ages.

What: West Orange’s Independence Day Celebration continues with a full day of Fourth of July festivities. The action begins at West Orange High School as the Varsity Baseball Team goes up against local rivals at 1:30 pm. After the game at 4:30 pm, the 76th Annual Lefty Boland Track & Fun Meet will move to their new location at Lincoln Field in WOHS. The meet will include fun races, contests, pony rides, and KidsZone, as well as traditional relays. The 9th Annual Classic DeSoto Car Display showing vintage cars will be held at the same time at the grounds of West Orange High School. The West Orange Rotary has expanded the Fourth of July menu to now include delicious picnic meal items and snacks throughout the day. The Rotary reinvests all the funds collected during the celebration back into the community. Musical entertainment begins at 7:30 pm along with face painters, balloon clowns, and jugglers. A spectacular display of fireworks will begin at dusk. The best view of the fireworks is on the artificial turf baseball field and on the grass lot in front of the new Gymnasium. Chairs, gum, glass bottles, and smoking is prohibited on the artificial field.

Maplewood’s 108th Annual July 4th Celebration

What: Come enjoy Maplewood’s July Fourth Celebration! Downtown Blues Festival in West Orange

What: Kick off Fourth of July weekend with the new extended West Orange Independence Day Celebration. The festivities begin with the first annual Downtown Blues Festival co-sponsored by the West Orange Recreation Department and Downtown Colgate Park. The festival will feature live blues bands coordinated by resident blues kingpin, Kevin Kiley. The Downtown Food Court will be selling delicious food from various restaurants and the Skinner-Dunn Horseshoe tournament will begin at 6:45pm. State Fair 

Who: All ages.
What: The Fair‘s back with action-packed fun for the entire family. This year’s Fair features plenty of new and returning entertainment from dazzling performers, thrilling rides and fun games to exhibits, shopping and bargain ticket nights. Special events include the first annual Tomato Fight, world record setting Bubble Wrap Popping, BMX Stunt Show, Circus and Magic shows.  
Where: Meadowlands, 50 Route 120, East Rutherford, NJ.
When: Friday, July 2 thru Monday, July 5. Times vary, see hours. Today from 6:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m.

Babies Big & Small Storytime
Who: Babies 6 months – 23 months.
What: Babies meet babies at this lap program, which includes rhymes, songs, language activities and board books.

New Jersey Jackals: Fireworks Spectacular

Who: All ages.

What: Cheer on the New Jersey Jackals in their home game against Sussex with Flyaway Friday and the Fireworks Spectacular.

Princess Cooking Class

Who: Children ages 4 – 12.

What: Learn to cook with your favorite princess! Dress up in your best princess gown to wear to the tea party and learn to make yummy treats like Edible wands and Princess Punch! This week, learn to cook with Cinderella!

What: Madison Square Kids is a free summer entertainment series for children on the Oval Lawn in historic Madison Square Park.
